We both know that you’ve got things that take up your time that shouldn’t. At the top of the list of culprits are those time sucking BSOs (Bright shiny objects). They’re notorious for leading you astray every day, all day. You know how it is…you’re working on something and then you have a thought about something else that needs to be done, or an awesome idea that you just have to bring to life and you take that detour. You follow the thought or that idea and before you know it an hour or more has gone by and you haven’t done a thing. What you were supposed to be doing is still not done.
You chase the shiny things like social media, that awesome, OMG idea that hits you, the thing that you keep forgetting to do, and all of the other things because they appear to be more appealing that what’s on your plate at the time they show up. I’ll admit, this stuff is pretty. It’s irresistible and maybe some of the things are just plain sexy. But no matter how pretty, irresistible or sexy they are, they don’t get you to the end of your day with things accomplished.
Letting go of all the shiny things starts with getting focused. That focus has to be on the important stuff, AKA priorities. This is the stuff that matters most, so of course it’s where you want your focus to be. Create your personal productivity system to help you get from to-do to done every day. Not chasing the squirrels means creating new habits to support you; habits that will have you moving away from putting out the daily fires.
One additional thing for you…get a notepad or notebook for those awesome, OMG ideas that come to you. When they hit, stop for just long enough to capture the details, then get back to work. At the end of your day, go back to the notebook and add time to your calendar to work on the things you’ve captured. This way you don’t lose the ideas and you’re not chasing the shiny things.
That’s how you let go of all the shiny things. If you have questions, post them here or message me on Facebook @ThirdEyeGroup.
